Everyday Persian slang

Slang is where colloquial Persian comes alive, and a few friendly expressions go a long way.

Damet garm دمت گرم literally means "may your breath be warm," and it works as a warm "thanks," "nice one," or "you're the best." It is one of the most beloved casual phrases in Persian.

Approval and admiration

Ival ایول means "nice," "bravo," or "way to go." Kheyli bahale خیلی باحاله means "it's really cool," whether about a person, a place, or a plan.

The all-purpose filler

Baba بابا literally means dad, but as a filler it works like "come on" or "dude," softening or emphasising a statement. Na baba can mean "no way" or "oh come on."

The playful "oops"

Khak bar saram خاک بر سرم literally means "dirt on my head," used dramatically for "oh no" or "how embarrassing." It sounds intense but is usually lighthearted.

Use damet garm and ival generously, read the room before stronger slang, and your Persian will sound far more natural and friendly.
