Five meanings of cheshm in Persian

If you learn cheshm only as "eye," real conversation will surprise you.

Cheshm چشم does mean eye. But in spoken Persian it also works as a polite answer, a promise, and part of several common expressions. The surrounding words tell you which meaning is active.

1. Eye

The basic meaning is simple: cheshm is an eye. You will see it in literal phrases about sight, faces, and appearance.

2. A polite yes

On its own, cheshm can mean "okay," "yes," or "of course" when someone asks you to do something. It is warmer and more deferential than a flat bale. In English, the closest feel is "sure, I'll do that."

3. I am on it

Cheshm, anjam midam چشم، انجام می‌دم means "sure, I'll take care of it." It is useful at home, at work, and in any situation where you want to acknowledge a request respectfully.

4. Waiting for someone

Cheshm-be-rah چشم‌به‌راه is literally "eye on the road." It describes waiting and watching for someone to arrive, often with emotional weight rather than casual impatience.

5. The evil eye

Cheshm-zakhm چشم‌زخم literally combines eye and wound. It refers to harm from envy or a bad look, the idea often called the evil eye in English.

The learner trap is treating every cheshm as the same word in English. In Persian, it is the same root moving through different social jobs.
