Persian colors

Colors are an easy, satisfying vocabulary set, and they slot straight into shopping and description.

The word for color is rang رنگ. The common colors are ghermez قرمز (red), abi آبی (blue), sabz سبز (green), and zard زرد (yellow).

Black, white, and grey

Sefid سفید is white, and black has two common words: siah سیاه and meshki مشکی, with meshki especially used for clothes. Khakestari خاکستری is grey.

The rest of the palette

Narenji نارنجی (orange), banafsh بنفش (purple), soorati صورتی (pink), and ghahve'i قهوه‌ای (brown) round out the everyday set. Notice that several colors come from objects: narenji from narenj (orange fruit), ghahve'i from ghahve (coffee).

Asking and describing

To ask, say che rangi? چه رنگی؟, what color. To describe, put the color after the noun: mashine ghermez is "the red car."
